This is a set of recommendations used by the Linux Foundation for their systems administrators.
SSH can use a variety of authentication methods, such as passwords and key pairs. Less common, and not particularly user friendly, are methods like OPIE. The latter is available per default in FreeBSD (and a few other BSDs I believe), but I can't recall a single case where I've seen it being used in the wild. Other implementations, like Google Authenticator make MFA easy to integrate and use, without being too disruptive for the user.
This document describes a method of reading and displaying previously used framebuffers from a variety of popular graphics cards. In all 4 tested laptops the content of the VRAM was not erased upon reboot. It is also possible to show that the content of the host VRAM can be accessed from a VirtualBox guest, thereby leaking possibly confidential information from a trusted host into an untrusted guest machine.
The automatic exploit generation challenge we address is given a program, automatically find security-critical bugs and generate exploits. Our approach uses a novel formal verification technique called preconditioned symbolic execution to make automatic exploit generation more scalable to real-world programs than without it.
In cryptographic applications, it is often useful to wipe data from memory once it is no longer needed. In a perfect world, this is unnecessary since nobody would gain unauthorized access to that data; but if someone is able to exploit an unrelated problem — a vulnerability which yields remote code execution, or a feature which allows uninitialized memory to be read remotely, for example — then ensuring that sensitive data (e.g., cryptographic keys) is no longer accessible will reduce the impact of the attack. In short, zeroing buffers which contained sensitive information is an exploit mitigation technique.
A SSL certificate is a way to encrypt a site's information and create a more secure connection. Additionally, the certificate can show the virtual private erver's identification information to site visitors. Certificate Authorities can issue SSL certificates that verify the server's details while a self-signed certificate has no 3rd party corroboration.
